The hotels around the world operate on an established plan and tarrif stucture (Room rate)is worked out based on the operating plans in the respective hotel.The various operating plans known worldwide are approved by the respective controlling authorities.
The term ‘Meal Plan” refers to the meal types that will be included in your room rate. This plan includes the number and sizeof porions that will be served per person. The various kinds of meal plans used in the industry are as follows.
● European Plan (E.P.):
Sometimes abbreviated as EP in the hote menu. It indicates that the quoted rate is strictly for lodging and does not include any meals. All food provided by the hote is billed seperately. Taxes and tips are usually additional as well. He has a choice of eating out at any other good restaurant. In India most of the hotels are running on European plan. Almost all the pubilc sector hotels are run on this basis, It’s main features are,
◆ It is mostly used in all types of hotels and especially the city or the downtown hotels.
◆ It is the cheapest as it only includes the room charges and early morning tea.
◆ It mainly caters the busy executives who are out of the hotel throughout the day for their business activities.
● Continental Plan (C.P.):
It is the meal plan in which the room rate includes the cost of continental breakfast daily. Continental breakfast includes fruit juice, toast, butter, jam, marmalade and tea/coffee. In this plan bed and breakfast are included in the tarrif charges and for other services he is seperately billed. It’s main features are as follows:
◆ It is very cheap as it includes the room charges, early morning tea and continental breakfast.
◆ It mainly caters the roadside travelers and other transient guests.
● American Plan (A.P.):
In this plan three meals a day are included in the room rate. This plan is also known as “Full Board” or “Full Pension”. The food menus are fixed meus known as Table d’hote menu. It includes bed, breakfast, two principle meals and evening tea. It doesn’t includes EMT i.e. Early Morning Tea or Coffee after lunch or dinner. Some hotels provides not only EMT but also Evening Tea. This analysis is mostly used at those tourist resorts, which are situated in the big cities. It’s main features are as follows:
◆ It is mainly used in the resorts and suburban hotels.
◆ It is most expensive as it includes the Room cahrges, Early morning tea, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
◆ It mainly caters to the tourists, vacationers and the conference attendees who stay within the hotel throughout the day for their activities.
● Modified American Plan (M.A.P.):
The tourists mostly prefer this place, as it is comparatively more flexible. It is offered in the most of the good hotels and is normally by arrangement. It includes hotel accommodation,EMT, Breakfast, Either Lunch or Dinner in the price of room. Thus this type of accommodation bed and breakfast and along with it one principle meal, Lunch or Dinner at the discretion of the guest is also included. It generally includes continental breakfast and either table d’hote lunch or dinner in the room rates. It is also known as “Demi-pension”. It has been observed that the Indian style local hotels in India follows European Plan. However, and the Western style hotels operating in India, which cater the foreign tourists, operates on the American Plan. It’s main features are as follows:
◆ This is mostly used in resorts and various hotels.
◆ This plan is cheaper than American Plan as it’s including room charges, early morning tea, breakfast, evening tea, lunch or dinner.
◆ This plan is mainly caters to the tourists who are out of the hotel during the day for sightseeing and during the night for night safaris.
● Bermuda Plan (B.P.):
It includes bed tea and American breakfast. This plan is also called as “Half Board” or “Semi-pension” plan. It’s main features are as follows:
◆ This plan is mostly used in the American motels and other samll roadside hotels.
◆ This plan is heavier and more expensive than the European and continental plan as it includes the room charges, early morning tea and American breakfast.
◆ This plan mainly caters to the tourists, vacationers and the conference attendees who stay within the hotel throughout the day for their activities.
